You need to have a github account. Personally I like that, it's a
barrier for some people maybe, but probably not too different than
requiring an account on Freenode, but fundamentally it is better
geared at "potential contributors".

It also works on private repositories, for those to join the chat room
you have to have access to the repository (i.e. making a repository
private makes the chatroom private).
