I agree that its only a problem when the JDBC driver is not on the server classpath (AS7 has "Global Modules" that allows for that as a last resort option).
I think it is always better to have the JDBC drivers be available globally. However, it doesn't matter which approach is used for these users, whether there is a global JDBC driver module that their application can depend on or the application includes the JDBC driver. They still need Hibernate to be able to see the JDBC driver. I think that these users could consider using the AS7 "Global Modules" (https://docs.jboss.org/author/display/AS71/Class+Loading+in+AS7) as a workaround but am also interested in whether Hibernate might also make changes to support this case better.
