Yes, you are right. I confused them. I was describing the GNOME character map, which can be opened with gnome-character-map, charmap, and gucharmap commands. As a side note, I wonder why gucharmap and gnome-characters are both pre-installed with gnome-desktop-service-type considering that GNOME lists [1][2] only the Characters application, which you described.
