Dimakakos, that didn't work. However, I found that every time a reboot, the 
sound problem is fixed, and GNOME sound controls work alright again; but if I 
log out and back in, sound is silenced and GNOME sound controls are disabled 
again.

I don't know where to look for information about possible errors...
