At the time I posted the comment on your blog, IE was the only allowed browser at work, and it just had the one option. We've opened things up now, and I honestly haven't looked into Firefox and what else it does. But with IE, there's a pretty good article on MSDN, and the Mozilla developer site also talks about Firefox's OpenSearch support. They're both using the same standard, with a few extra additions per browser. Most current browser support both OpenSearch and autodiscovery through adding a link tag into the head of your site's pages, though, which I guess is the important part.
