Hi Ed,

The trick was to configure tokyocabinet with /usr/local as the
prefix, after that cfengine found it. 

./configure --prefix=/usr/local
and then 
sudo gmake &&  sudo gmake install

As a side note I'd like to say that I've also tried compiling cfengine
with qdbm but it was core dumping also.
