I answer myself here - the problem resided (mainly) in the /etc/nsswitch file. It had to be configured to look at NIS. There were also some issues with the ypbind daemon not being configured to start at boot (critical of course), but the main one was that nsswitch file. Now all the test hosts produce the desired output.
