As far as I remember, a UNIX username *must* start with an alphabetic
character, so names starting with a number are illegal. At least, it was
like that in the past.

While Linux (and other systems) may have been or become more permissive,
other systems may still be strict regarding that rule, so you may want
to avoid number-starting usernames for portability.

PS: I don't have any reference to a document, I am afraid. It's just old
experience (many years ago a friend of mine, trying to set his username
to "4mori" on Linux, got an error message and a spit in his eye by the
system ;)
