Actually both :)

$(shortname) is set to $(names), if a $(names) class is defined.

What I desired was that, once $(shortname) is set, a class springs into
life immediately. That's not the case but, again, I worked around that
using Nick's trick -- I had worked around it in a different way, namely
with:

"has_shortname" or => { @(names) } ;

but that's another story :) I like Nick's trick best.
