This is (and has been) a long debate. To avoid repeating it, let's just say that it saves unnecessary coding for something that is necessary. Class expressions that contain non-class characters are not well-formed and therefore mean nothing, but it is helpful to embed things like variables in ifvarclass for form classes as patterns.
