I must admit that I'm also bit confused, but I'm quite sure that
'package_list_command' with 'package_list_name_regex',
'package_list_version_regex' , ('package_list_arch_regex') and
'package_installed_regex' should be enough for your application. Cfengine
caches package list be default.
To my experience 'package_update_list_command' is used to update package
manager's package list from repositories. 'package_list_update_ifelapsed' is
definitely used here, but somehow I recall that 'package_list_update_ifelapsed'
is also used to determine when to update 'package_list_command'. This might be
outdated information and this is the confusing part.
However I have left 'package_list_update_ifelapsed' to default and all works
fine.
