B, Thanks for your ideas! Your solution is very similar to one I was thinking about, but it feels like it doesn't scale well. We do have an ACL slist, along with use of ppkeys, so we've managed trust as much as we can in our environment. Your solution would work, but for this particular task, I don't think the effort involved is proportional to what we get by using cfengine as the tool. Thanks everyone for your thoughts on this.
