This also made me sad.  I'll deal, and search engines will index the new
stuff...  But I once heard Tim Lee describe the web as an "API" -- new
versions should not break old "function calls".  I really liked that in
theory, though in practice most sites often break old links.

Of course managing all the redirects takes time, and if old web logs are
still available one method of mapping old URIs to new (beyond just rewriting
1-to-1, since that won't work when the entire site map changes) while
getting the most return on the invested time would be to do a quick analysis
of web logs from past 6-12 months (if you have them), and minimally ensure
the top 10% of frequently accessed URIs redirect as intended.

The "easy" way, I guess, since the most-confused will likely be new(er)
folks trying to find manuals by following web/email/forum links, would be to
have your 404 page redirect to the main doc page. :-)
