Thanks for the replies:

Deb:  I don't see how bindtointerface helps with setting up layered bonded 
interfaces.  My problem isn't about cfengine binding itself to any particular 
interface at all.  It is about defining a layered structure of data (which 
happens to be about network interfaces, but in a sense that is almost 
irrelevant) and then using that structured data to set up various files (which 
happen to be network "ifcfg-*" files, but ).

Neil:  Ultimately I could use that to check what has already been set up; 
indeed I probably ought to, so thanks for the tip.  But the question is about 
setting it up in the first instance (the checking comes later!).
