That's cool!  I nearly used Perl CPAN module Net::Amazon::EC2 but it
does not support micro
instances yet.

I've made some progress, I have a complete demo now, at
http://www.verticalsysadmin.com/cfengine/casit/

next step is to de-shell-ify it and cfengine-ify it some more.  plus
I'd like to play with moving away from SSH
for file distribution and using cf-serverd instead but I didn't want
to get into key exchange issues being
on a short timeline and all.
