Well, it appears that it is AIX's "ps" command that is the issue.ps auxw will leave a space at the end of the line. ps auxcw will not (but not suitable for our purposes). So, either modify cfengine to strip trailing whitespace off of the ps command (chomp in perl speak), or keep this in mind for AIX and always append "\s*$" for ps regexes.
