I've had all kinds of trouble having to compile for a multitude of systems
including RHEL 64 and 32, Suse, AIX, Solaris SPARC and Solaris x86. The best
method I've found is to build OpenSSL, PCRE, Berkeley DB or TokyoCabinet and
then build Cfengine statically against them. This makes the binaries portable
and prevents having to ensure dependencies are installed on each potential
client. This is especially useful for AIX and Solaris because they typically
have very old versions of the dependencies available.
