Yeah, when I was last in ops, I added in this sort of "ping" report;
each system would send some SQL queries to a central server to report on
the state of things.  (Numbers of processes, and such; part of the point
was to report on the states of DBMS servers, so a once an hour "ping" of
how many users were connected was a mighty useful thing.)

Any servers that didn't report in would need some examination.  I'm not
sure anyone got around to implementing any automated search for such,
but it would certainly be an easy SQL query, especially for a department
of DBAs :-).
