Yeah, when I was last in ops, I added in this sort of "ping" report; each system would send some SQL queries to a central server to report on the state of things. (Numbers of processes, and such; part of the point was to report on the states of DBMS servers, so a once an hour "ping" of how many users were connected was a mighty useful thing.) Any servers that didn't report in would need some examination.
