We're using a similar approach here with SVN, although we divvy the dir trees up between groups - Engineering and Systems Administration.
I would like to pose a follow-on question to Jessica's: Using your favorite repository software (insert subversion, Bazaar, or whatever here), we would have customized files and configuration info checked in to SVN. However, what if your intention is to completely re-install an Operating System and you want to do so with Cfengine3/Nova ? How would you go about this via promises ??? I'm not seeing the light here...
