Ok.  I figured it out.  I wasn't pointing to all the required dependencies when 
configuring...

Ultimately the following worked for me.... 

./configure --with-berkeleydb=/usr/local/BerkeleyDB.4.8 
--with-openssl=/Users/myuser/local/openssl-0.9.8l --with-pcre=/usr/local/pcre

I'm all set now.
