I found the problem. I installed Berkeley DB from Sunfreeware. It lists libgcc as a dependency. I wasn't certain as to whether or not this had already be installed by someone else over time so I installed Berkeley on its own. The install went fine and no dependency errors occurred. After turning up no new leads on why CF was not compiling I back tracked and install the libgcc dependency. After that the next compile was successful. Thus is seems that the problem is that Berkeley does not check the libgcc dependency when it installs.
