This is an issue reported by [~yeshavora]:

In branch-1, Namenode fails to start with "HTTP/_h...@example.com" value of 
hadoop.http.authentication.kerberos.principal property in core-site.xml. It 
only supports hostname instead _HOST.  Namenode can support 
"HTTP/detailed.hostname....@example.com" value. 

Same issue also exists with datanodes.
