I'm using ghc 7.4.1 (from the Ubuntu Precise repository). Don't know if this is relevant but "ghc-pkg list" tells me that I have:
/var/lib/ghc/package.conf.d Cabal-1.14.0 directory-1.1.0.2 process-1.1.0.1 ... Mike.
