Mazal tov. So well deserved.
With quiet efficiency Marcie gets so much accomplished and makes everyone so
happy and relaxed.
Wonderful choice
Warm regards
Shoshanah

The Association of Jewish Libraries (AJL) is proud to announce that longtime
member Marcie Eskin has been named the 2025 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award winner.
The award, named for the librarian, social activist, and founder of National
Jewish Book Month, is bestowed in recognition of loyal and ongoing
contributions to the Association of Jewish Libraries and to the profession of
Judaica librarianship.

Marcie Eskin, a synagogue librarian for more than twenty-five years, started
her career as an environmental protection specialist with the U.S.
Environmental Protection Agency where she worked for over seventeen years.
Marcie now serves as a librarian for two Illinois congregations: North Suburban
Synagogue Beth El in Highland Park and Beth Hillel Bnai Emunah in Wilmette. She
is a past president of the Association of Jewish Libraries’ Chicago chapter,
taught an AJL Classroom course on the Elazar Classification System for
synagogue libraries, and has contributed children’s book reviews to AJL News
and Reviews. Marcie was the registrar for the 2009 AJL conference in Chicago
and, since 2015, has been handling the registration for all conferences. A
member of AJL’s conference planning committee since 2020, she will co-chair the
2026 conference in Chicago. Marcie holds an AB in government from Cornell
University and a master’s degree in library and information science from
Dominican University.

Marcie’s professionalism, dedication, flexibility, and patience are only some
of the qualities that have earned her this special award. Following the legacy
of Fanny Goldstein, the award’s namesake, Marcie has made substantial
contributions to AJL and is an inspiration to the field of Judaica
librarianship and the greater world of librarianship.

“I met Marcie Eskin while working on the 2009 AJL Conference in Chicago and was
immediately impressed by her work ethic, professionalism, and warm
personality,” says Rachel Kamin, a colleague of Marcie’s at North Suburban
Synagogue Beth El and the 2021 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award recipient. “As the
registrar for at least fourteen AJL conferences, Marcie has dedicated hundreds
of hours to managing registrations, meals, special dietary needs, award
winners, presenters, and guests, all with specific requirements. Her role
demands exceptional organizational skills, patience, and perseverance. She is a
dedicated, detail-oriented team player who interacts with colleagues,
congregants, and students of all ages with kindness and professionalism.”
Rachel also notes that North Suburban Synagogue Beth El is the only synagogue
institution to have more than one of its professionals awarded the Fanny
Goldstein Merit Award—in addition to Marcie and Rachel, Cheryl Banks received
the award, in 2003—a testament to the synagogue’s commitment to its library and
librarians.

Marcie will receive her award on June 23, 2025, during this year’s AJL digital
conference<https://urldefense.com/v3/__https://jewishlibraries.org/2025-digital-conference/__;!!KGKeukY!0V-9kjk0qgYyO321oEj8oKrJjAuxMZbNAfbf9Fy5jR6SIjLa98pkKfiWXBuerV7p6mn_T8sTgLOvgXC0z20EE_6iy8IylKVo$>.

Members of the 2025 Fanny Goldstein Merit Award committee are Gail Shirazi
(chair), Michelle Margolis, and Lisa Silverman.
