Dear Colleagues, I was so saddened to hear of the passing of Žilvinas Beliauskas, may his memory be a blessing. I chaired the conference session at which he was scheduled to present, and I know how disappointed he was that he would not be able to attend. We reassured him that we would find a future opportunity for him to present his paper.
All of the eloquent words of praise for Žilvinas are testament to the tremendous impression that he made on everyone whom he met. He demonstrated so much drive and commitment to his work in Lithuania and he recognized the power of collaboration and partnerships. He certainly modeled the kind of active engagement that we hope to foster increasingly with colleagues internationally who share our goals, our challenges, and our passions. My apologies if someone has already made the suggestion, but I expect that there are many among us who would like to make donations to AJL in Žilvinas’ memory. Perhaps with guidance from our Development Consultant and our Treasurer, we can find the appropriate approach to pool such donations and direct them towards future conference support for international attendees? It would be lovely to follow up with a collective acknowledgment to Žilvinas’ family and colleagues back in Lithuania. Also, at an appropriate time in the future, we might inquire if his planned AJL presentation was in a completed written form such that it might be shared (e.g., read by a colleague at next year’s conference, and/or added to the proceedings).
