Norman used the Hebrew College Library extensively for researching his many books. He was also one of the Prozdor teachers who insisted that his classes learn how to use the library and make use of it for their studies. I enjoyed kibbitzing with Norman. He always had a story and a smile. His books covered a wide range of topics, things he was curious about. I also frequently ran into him and his wife Rosalind at movies, concerts, and lectures. The last time I had seen him he had told me about the two books he had in the press, on the Yiddish Forward editor Abe Cahan, and a history of antisemitism. I had just recently heard from his brother-in-law that he was exploring ideas for his next book. In the late 1980's, when I was looking around the Boston area for people to help me figure out what kind of software product to purchase to automate my library's collection, Norm graciously invited me to his school library, and demonstrated the program he was using. In 2006, when the New England Chapter of AJL (NEAJL) hosted AJL's annual conference in Cambridge, Norm was on the planning committee and it was an honor and a pleasure to work with him. And of course, many of us know that Norm authored 23 wonderful books, mostly for young readers, and many on Jewish topics. One of my favorites that is particularly significant this week is Heeding the call: Jewish Voices in America's Civil Rights Struggle.
