Hi,

Distribution of standalone apps (not contained in 
package repositories) on Linux is in the dark age.

For a possible solution to the problem, check the 
installer of Google Earth for Linux. It's nothing 
standard, but it seems to work in a generic and 
user-friendly way. [ Another candidate could be 
Skype for Linux, but I didn't check it more 
closely. ]
