April , Download the Alternate CD Install not the usual

http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/downloadmirrors#alternate

This allow to you more options

When you define partitions and mounts , create a root partition and mount /
on this
then create another partition and mount /home on it , finally create a swap
Partition with double size of your memory in PC

Now you can install , and in the next install you keep safe your data in
/home , please take care to do not format
this partition when you have data in it.
