That is because make_gnu.sh tries to 'install' Harbour into system dirs by default. So by default you have to use 'sudo'. Or to avoid that you can redefine HB_INSTALL_PREFIX before build:
export HB_INSTALL_PREFIX=`pwd`/`dirname $0` [ NOTE: I didn't test above line, just assembled it from some local settings. ] IMO current default isn't very convenient, but that's how it is now, and that's also how it is with other Linux applications AFAIU.
