No, not at all, I wasn't sure about it, and probably I have only seen it with Git, but now I've checked and it seems SVN does support it too. http://jingyeluo.blogspot.com/2006/08/svn-external-steps.html We need to carefully use it (I haven't read through the whole documentation yet to see the capabilities), because one of the points of bringing external stuff into our tree is to integrate them in our make system.
