Totally agree.
One problem with Windows API is that even porting to
WinCE is a huge pain (or even between compilers).
All that energy is IMO much better spent on GTK or QT.

The next big feature for a GUI is remote support, like
X Window. I'm not sure how QT shines here, but GTK
must support it somehow because it's based on X.
(it's another question I got completely lost when trying
to create a test setup with Windows client and Linux
(or Darwin) X server.)

This way you can get a proper GUI through the net,
so you don't need Terminal Server, fragile and slow
data connection.
