I use http://gladewin32.sourceforge.net. The problem is more on OSX; MacPorts has a libglade port but it doesn't build ATM. So like you I've removed glade and I got a working installation that creates the same examples under Ubuntu, XP and OSX ( even the trayicon example works as expected ).
