So, despite passing the torture test for a few days, it's now failed
during normal operation :( Unfortunately I've somewhat lost the desire
to investigate further, so I think it's time to buy new mobo, processor,
RAM and cooler.

For anyone that's interested: you can do this (on debian) by editing
/etc/default/grub and to the line that begins:
GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT=
add something like:
memmap=100M\\\$800M
which will tell the kernel not to use the 100MB of memory starting
at 800MB.

sticks. So I could move the two sticks to the free slots. I'm
