Actually, the system under development is a HR management system using OSS tools ... which can manage at least 10000 employees at different locations working for different projects ... Conventional wisdom would suggest MySQL or Postgress ... But I want to use a JAVA BASED DATABASE which makes the project totally JAVA ... SPRING/HIBERNATE/TOMCAT/H2orDERBY Advancements in H2/Derby/Java along with maybe in the near future there could be processor support for virtual machines ... could brighten the future ... I still dont know what 64-bit JDK/JRE could spell out for JAVA as a whole apart from more heap memory permgen space ... Cheaper RAM in the near future would mean 32 GB / 64 GB RAM could be posibility on entry level server systems enabling small medium companies to better invest in servers ... Some tools like BigMemory and EHCache from Terracotta show promise for 2G limitation of JVM / Linux Kernel / Windows (single process contiguous memory limit) So a supplementory question is that would H2 (or Derby) scale to full fledged OLAP and OLTP VLDBs in future?
