it's somewhat tangential here, but versioned releases could potentially serve 
also as marked commits; essentially a ladder of commits through which one is 
guaranteed to be ablte to guix pull, one step at a time.

IIUC guix pull also has a bootstrapping issue similar to compilers, and i don't 
see it handled formally anywhere.
