Thanks for the tip. Truly, documentation is not so hard, especially when it's incomplete! (The NEWS entry fails to mention that hardlinks fail, too.) Unfortunately, ‘readlink’ is no help for hardlinks. The proper way is to support "make install", and that's real work.
