Hmm, I'm inclined not to put this into 1.8, at least not in 1.8.0. I can't really put my finger on it, as I see nothing fundamental wrong with the patch, but I also don't see the immediate need for it. That is probably because I haven't followed the whole load-path idea discussion closely. So, I'd like to not put this into 1.8 and wait until more than the "first minimal step" is available and then consider whether to put it into the 1.8 series at that point.
