Alexander, I think we must be at cross purposes because a hide signal cannot be emitted on a widget until it has been shown, and during construction it has not been shown. In any event, I do not really understand what you are trying to do so I do not think I help you any further on this I am afraid. Also be careful with expressions like "catching" a signal, as GObject signals have nothing to do with unix asynchronous signals. Also, you use g_signal_connect() to connect to the signal, not to emit it.
