Hmmm... I'm running ubuntu 8.10 also, but with compiz. I just switched
to metacity and I see what you're talking about. The code below works
for me in both metacity and compiz if I make pop a toplevel window:
- popup = gtk_window_new (GTK_WINDOW_POPUP);
+ popup = gtk_window_new (GTK_WINDOW_TOPLEVEL);
