I do understand this. Maybe I wasn't clear enough: I would like to see
GnomeCanvas (which is nice) or an equivalent as a GTK widget.

On the contrary. The references [1,2] I gave you point to a project porting
the GnomeCanvas to GTK. I just don't know which state it is nowadays.
