No luck ... the thing reports 400x400 (pixels) ...
... and when I render it in Internet Explorer, the rendering is instant.
Any other ideas??

Could librsvg be rendering your image at an enormous size?
You might want to gdk_pixbuf_get_width(), gdk_pixbuf_get_height()
