whatever happened to the gtk_kennel?

Back in the day there were plans to incorporate "kennels" into gtk -
it was a method for sizing widgets without the contraints of the
widget heirarchy.  I think they were first used in
"BEAST", but were planned for general consumption.  I don't see them
in the docs now.
