In one version of the GGAD, I found a reference to a function:

gtk_layout_freeze (GTK_LAYOUT (canvas));

On the other hand, in the reference manual, it says:

"This is a deprecated function, it doesn't do anything useful."

So... I would advise against its use, and use one of the other
suggestions I sent.
