In that case it doesn't seem terribly productive to propose reverting
it, RFC or not.  If we can't figure out a better approach, making the
value architecture-specific using #ifdef or similar would be more
constructive.

(However, hopefully somebody with more domain expertise than me can
actually track down the problem properly.)
