Both are typically present on x86 and x86_64 systems running oprofile due to oprofile limitations. While you can technically store the uncompressed kernel anywhere storing it together with the bootable kernel (and its config, symbol list, ...) is suggested in oprofile documentation and it is place no worse than any other.
