How about "Ctrl-x to boot, Ctrl-c for command line, or ESC to abandon changes and return to the menu"? We don't need to use the "C-" notation at all if it needs explanation. "Ctrl-x" should be clear to most users (everyone knows "Ctrl-Alt-Del").
