AHA!  Squirrelled away under "4.6.5.8 Keeps, boxed keeps, and displays", 
there's a non-wrapping paragraph, i,e, .LD. That fixes the unwanted wrapping, 
and .SH overrun, causing swathes of bold.

As .LD is a non-wrapping paragraph in function, it could usefully be mentioned 
or pointed to under 4.6.5.3 Paragraphs, ideally together with .LP, and the 
behaviour distinction noted. (That would have saved two days of lacking the 
needed paragraph type here.)

Yes, after nearly 40 years, I know manpages are bottom-up, so mostly useful

for confirming what you already know, but use-case exploration is

necessarily top-down. Thus a modicum of WHAT organisation of a manual, at least 
added to the implementer's HOW perspective, is of considerable utility to users.
