To follow up on the comparison, here's mine (using only word-spacing, no letter-spacing). Overall, I think I'm with Werner on the issue of letterspacing. I usually find it visible (and irritating), but I can tolerate rather large amounts of word-spacing. So I guess it simply depends on what one has gotten used to over the years... By the way, there already exists a "user space" paragraph optimizer for groff, written by Thomas Baruchel. Check the list archives.
