Looks like these are escape sequences  intended  for
terminals  that  'know'  how  to treat them. You can
tell groff to eliminate them and  output  a  vanilla
text file with the '-P-cbu' command-line option.

XMessage  is  not a terminal and probably can't pro-
cess them.
