As Hurricane Emily approaches, Mexico advises tourists to cancel Cancun
trips

By Jules Siegel

CANCUN, Jun. 15, 2005 -- Announcing that there is a 90% chance that
force four Hurricane Emily will hit the eastern coast of the Yucatan
Peninsula, authorities in Mexico and the state of Quintana Roo have
asked the travel industry to stop sending tourists here. The resort is
currently 94% full, with approximately 80,000 international and domestic
tourists.

The state Secretary of Tourism, Gabriela Rodríguez, said that the
decision to evacuate hotels on the island and other coastal areas in the
rest of the state will be made when Emily's path is more clearly
defined, but hurricane shelter capacity on the mainland is insufficient
to handle a full evacuation at present hotel occupancy levels.

During Gilbert, the force five hurricane that hit Cancun directly in
September, 1988, the Hotel Zone was evacuated, but at least one hotel,
the Sheraton remained in operation throughout the storm. Some sections
of the island of Cancun were flooded, but all hotels and other buildings
remained intact, although some sustained moderate to severe damages. No
tourist casualties were reported. Since then, there have been several
hurricane alerts, but Cancun was spared when their paths changed direction.

Further information in English direct from the Cancun Hotel Zone will be
posted on <http://www.cafecancun.com> as the situation evolves.
